Message From Marli - Ovarian Cancer

Stafford Park walk
Stafford Park walk for Message From Marli
Saturday, January 29, 2011
In typical Miami winter fashion, the weather was 70 degrees with not a cloud in the sky. We had 250-300 people attend the walk. The positive demographic statistic of the day was that approximately 175 of the attendees were students from local high schools (Miami Springs Senior/Anchor Club, Ronald Reagan Doral Senior, School for Advanced Studies, Westland High, Blessed Trinity). Our foundation promotes youthful involvement with Marli's Message of early detection of ovarian cancer. This promises a brighter future for our cause and positive statistics going forward involving the disease. The combination of DJ FRANKIE belting out tunes and the youthful attendees made for a high energy day. All attendees promised to get the message out via Facebook and other electronic avenues.

These teenagers can eat! We went through 200 cheeseburgers, 200 hot dogs, 200 bags of chips, and 20 cases of Gatorade and water provided for free by MFM, while Anchor Club of Miami Springs Senior sold yummy baked goods to raise additional funds. Luckily, we had local politicians show up who were unknowingly put to work on the grill feeding the crowd. They earned their votes and had a great time doing it. The Miami Springs Recreation Department Staff did an outstanding job of keeping our garbage cans empty and the restrooms spotless throughout the day.

Marli went to work at Blessed Trinity at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday to catch up on grading. She showed up to the event at 1:00, grabbed the microphone and spoke to the cheering crowd. She led the walk and kept busy all day with walking, meeting and greeting, and photos. Considering she had her chemotherapy treatment on Thursday - only two days before the walk - Marli is officially qualified as an AMAZING LADY! Mason snapped pictures for the MFM site, Melanie ran the sign-up booth along with Claudia (the MFM Event Coordinator), and Mia (THE DIVA) posed for pictures when asked by a variety of paparazzi while Grandma Karen chased her around all day. We all finally succumbed to exhaustion at the end of the day and drowned ourselves at Toms NFL (big supporter of MFM) in smothered waffle fries and wings.

The event netted $4,205.00 for the MFM Foundation!!

A THANK YOU to everyone who attended, participated, and supported the event. A special thanks to Melanie Wolff and Claudia Rey for putting up with ME and making the day so special for everyone.

Our next events are on Saturday, February 12th (a police-escorted 16 mile bicycle ride on South Beach; party afterwards at Finnegans2 on Lincoln Road) and on Friday, February 18th (Midtown Athletic Club Weston Spin-a-thon). Stay up-to-date by visiting our FUTURE EVENTS PAGE at and keep up with the fun!
